Dr. Roy Madigan, D.V.M., is not just a veterinarian. He is one of the leading experts in canine Chagas disease in the United States.

• Founder of Vida Pharmacal, focused on breakthrough parasitic disease treatments
• Filed the first veterinary drug patent for anti-T. cruzi activity in dogs
• Principal scientist for the U.S. military working dog Chagas treatment study
• Veterinary lead for the Texas Chagas Task Force alongside the CDC and UT Health
• Pioneer in developing diagnostic and treatment protocols for infected dogs

Your pet is being treated by the same expert helping shape how Chagas disease is understood nationwide.

Get In Touch

Chagas disease progresses in stages. The earlier it is identified:

• The more treatment options are available
• The better heart damage can be managed
• The higher the chance of improving quality of life

Waiting can mean irreversible cardiac damage.

Early Detection. Advanced Treatment. Led by One of the Nation’s Top Experts.

Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Chagas disease is often silent early on, but warning signs may include:

• Lethargy or decreased activity
• Fainting or collapse
• Irregular heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unexplained weight loss

If your dog spends time outdoors, lives in Central Texas, or has been exposed to insects, they may be at risk even without symptoms.

If your dog may have been exposed to kissing bugs, do not wait. Chagas disease can silently damage the heart before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis can make the difference.

At Central Texas Vet, we go beyond standard testing.
Dr. Madigan is actively developing advanced serologic testing methods to improve detection accuracy.

Your dog’s evaluation may include:

• Comprehensive physical exam
• Cardiac screening
• Specialized blood testing for T. cruzi
• Advanced diagnostics when needed

Early detection allows for better management and improved outcomes.

Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, transmitted by “kissing bugs” commonly found in Texas.
Once infected, dogs may appear normal while the parasite attacks the heart and other organs.

Without intervention, Chagas can lead to:

• Heart disease
• Arrhythmias
• Sudden death

Questions? We Have Answers

If your dog may be at risk, schedule an evaluation today and get answers from one of the leading experts in the field.

Creating a Safe and Calm Home Environment

Holiday gatherings, visitors, and unusual schedules can be stressful for new pets. Establishing a quiet space helps them feel secure during their first days at home. A designated room or corner equipped with bedding, water, and a safe place to rest allows pets to retreat when activity levels rise. Keeping decorations out of reach and avoiding accessible hazards, such as tinsel, ribbons, candles, and small ornaments, helps prevent accidental injuries or ingestion.

Preparing for the Adjustment Period

Every new pet experiences an adjustment phase. Some may explore confidently from the beginning, while others may need more time to feel comfortable. During the first several days, pets may eat less, sleep more, or behave cautiously as they become familiar with their new environment. Offering consistent routines helps ease this transition. Regular feeding times, structured play, and predictable quiet periods let pets understand what to expect each day, even if holiday events create occasional disruptions.

Introducing Family and Visitors Gradually

Holiday gatherings can overwhelm a new pet due to increased noise and unfamiliar people. Introducing visitors slowly and allowing pets to approach at their own pace encourages positive interactions. Children should be guided to handle and play with pets gently, and pets should always have the option to retreat to their safe space if they feel overstimulated. For newly adopted adult pets, slow introductions help build trust and reduce fear based behaviors.

Setting Up Essential Supplies Before Arrival

Having supplies ready before your pet arrives helps create a smooth transition. Essential items include pet safe food, bowls, a crate or carrier, bedding, toys for enrichment, and waste cleanup supplies. For puppies and kittens, litter boxes or safe potty areas should be set up in advance. Providing age appropriate toys encourages healthy play and helps redirect chewing or scratching behaviors.

Scheduling the First Veterinary Visit

Even if your new pet appears healthy, a veterinary exam should be scheduled soon after adoption. This visit provides a baseline health assessment and helps your veterinarian identify any early concerns. Your veterinarian will check weight, temperature, heart and lung function, oral health, gait, and overall development. Bringing any adoption records, breeder notes, or paperwork helps the veterinary team build an accurate medical history. While this exam is important, the content does not duplicate your puppy and kitten care blog; instead, it focuses on the immediate post adoption period and holiday conditions.

Understanding Vaccination and Preventive Care Requirements

Preventive care needs depend on your pet’s age and medical status. Puppies and kittens may require a vaccine series, parasite testing, and ongoing boosters. Newly adopted adult pets may need updated vaccinations, parasite prevention, or follow up diagnostics. Your veterinarian will outline a plan that fits your pet’s age, lifestyle, and health risk, ensuring they begin their new life on a safe foundation

Supporting Early Socialization Without Overwhelming Your Pet

The holidays can present both opportunities and challenges for socialization. New pets benefit from exposure to household activities, sounds, and gentle handling. However, overstimulation can cause stress, especially when your home is busy. Allowing controlled interactions and monitoring your pet’s comfort level encourages healthy social development. Puppies and kittens experiencing their first holidays especially benefit from positive, calm introductions to new experiences.

Household Safety Considerations Unique to the Holidays

Seasonal items can pose risks to curious pets. Electrical cords, tree water, holiday plants, and food items such as chocolate, poultry bones, and baked goods can all be hazardous. Kitchen activity increases significantly during the holidays, and new pets may explore countertops or reach dropped food. Secure trash bins and keep harmful ingredients out of reach. For live trees, ensure they are anchored securely to avoid tipping if a pet climbs or pulls at branches.

Creating Predictable Routines Despite Holiday Chaos

While holidays often bring irregular schedules, pets benefit from consistency. Feeding, playtime, training, and rest should occur at roughly the same time each day. Routines build confidence and help pets settle more easily. Short training sessions support early learning and reinforce good behavior, especially when guests are present.

Helping New Pets Sleep Overnight

New pets may have difficulty settling during their first few nights, especially in a noisy or unfamiliar home. Providing a quiet sleeping area with comfortable bedding helps them relax. Soft background noise, such as a low fan or gentle music, can reduce nighttime disruptions. Avoid introducing too much stimulation before bedtime, and allow your pet to adjust gradually as they learn the household rhythm.

A Smooth Start Leads to Lifelong Success

Bringing home a new pet during the holidays can be a rewarding experience when families understand what to expect. With preparation, patience, and early veterinary guidance, pets adapt more quickly and begin building healthy routines that continue long after the season ends. To support your new companion’s transition, schedule a wellness visit with your nearest United Veterinary Care clinic. Early evaluation ensures your new pet begins their life in your home with confidence, comfort, and the right medical foundation.

Welcoming a new pet during the holiday season can be joyful and memorable, but it also comes with unique challenges. Holidays are often busy, loud, and full of disruptions that can feel overwhelming for a puppy, kitten, or newly adopted adult pet. Setting clear expectations and preparing your home can help your new companion adjust smoothly and safely.
